Donatello Sculptor, Artist (1386-1466)
Italian artist Donatello was the greatest sculptor before Michelangelo and was the most inspirational artist in his period.
Donatello was born in Florence, Italy around 1368. He was the son of Niccolo Di Betto Bardi. He was educated at the home of the martellis where he learned metallurgy and the fabrication of metals. Donatello apprenticed early with well known sculptors, in 1403 he apprenticed with Florene metalsmith and sculptor Lorenzo Ghiberti. He assisted them in building the cathedral doors. Between 1411 and 1413 he sculpted the marble figure St.Mark. By this time Donatello was gaining a reputation for creating larger than life sculptors. His professional success continued throughout his middle years.
From 1443 to 1453 Donatello worked in the city of padua. there he designed a altarpiece for the church santo. In padua he also created a bronze statue of the military commander gattamelata the first sculptor to come down from the renaissance. Donatello spent his old age in Florence, often working for the medic. The older Donatello carved a sculptor called the haunting. Which described the troubles he was going through in that time. He died on December 13, 1466. Having two undone pieces his pupil finished his work which gave his insight into human suffering.
