After numerous raids Ivan The Great had forced the Mongols to accept his sovereignty(he status, dominion, power, or authority of a sovereign; royalty) , broke up the political freedom, secularized larger tracts of the northern empire's church lands, annexed its colonies, and replace those who lived within the area with familiar elements. In the next series of years Ivan had conquered the Mongols and gained the area of Lapland (later known as Finland) through the Ural Mountains. At this point Ivan III was recognized as a man great for all his conquering for Moscow.
