The History of The Sudanic Kingdoms
The Sudanic Kingdoms consisted of Ghana, Songhai, and Mali. All three of these kingdoms were built off of each other. Due to the falling of Ghana Mali up rised. Ghana ruled for about 700 years. In the middle of Mali’s reign Songhai uprised. All of the kingdoms were in the same region which is West Africa. Without these three kingdoms Niger and Burkina faso.
Ghana was the first of the three kingdoms.The name Ghana means “The Land of Gold”, it celebrated their rich heritage. It was made of farm villages and their biggest trade was salt, which was controlled by the king. It was surrounded by two rivers The kings, like now, collected tolls or taxes. The capital of Ghana was Kumbi Saleh. The fall of Ghana was because they were invaded and took over by Almoravid Muslims.
Next up was Mali. They were originally called the mandinka people. They were ruled by Sunni Ali. They expanded outward from previous Ghana. They weren’t really that strict on what religion people believed in. They also were big in salt. Their biggest mining site was called Taghaza. They also conquered many different cities. Mali had a very prosperous reign, but after Mansa Musa died his son tried to hold up the empire only to end up failing.
Songhai was the last of the three sudanic kingdoms.It started out in the 1400’s the capital of Songhai was Called Goa. It was a very fertile region. A man named Askia Muhammad was the emperor of Songhai. It was the largest state or kingdom in west Africa. In the end they just ended up breaking into smaller societies.
