The Rise of the Cities
The number of towns in Western Europe grew rapidly during the middle ages. Towns became full of traders and expanded a lot during this time. Everyone started to trade and this brought them together. They were people called vassals serfs, and. The vassals were the lords of their land. They oversee the running of the farmlands of the manor. Vassals were expected to fight and provide soldiers and arms from his manor. The serfs were generally peasant farmers who provided manual labor in their master’s land. They worked in the land at least three times a day. the status as a serf was passed to his children. they lived in small villages around their masters.
As the towns became more populated they became more diverse.Also, there were those who were healthy as well as some who were not as fortunate.The people who moved from the manors started to come to the towns.Some were called serfs. They did this illegally but if they were able to not get caught for a while, they were no longer known as serfs.
As an example, during the middle ages, Paris multiplied and became a center of trade, commerce and education. In 1200, the population was 110,000 and by the 1300’s the population doubled to 228,000. By 1328, the population had grown to 250,000. However, years later in 1500, the population decreased to 200,000 due to the Black Plague and the Hundred Years’ War. The Renaissance recovery lead to another increase in population to 275,000 during the 1550’s.
In western europe,capitalism began and it became a money economy. The towns began to get granted charters of their own and also the right to exist outside the feudal system. Feudalism is the dominant social system in medieval europe where the nobility held lands from the crown in exchange for their military services.Feudalism in the government let the kings keep track of the serfs and peasants.
The feudal system was strong; however, the growth in trade and cities was starting to decline the power. The local lords were losing power due to the fact that the cities were increasing in size and wealth.
