The republic went from a small group of individuals that had a classic civilization had its own rights but in a different way. The republic of rome was a model city of government and law. They also had good military strategies and strong boundaries. Even the strong military could not hold off the latins when they invaded the peninsula in 1000 b.c.e. The government for rome gradually grew to the way of monarchy.
The structure of the roman republic was controlled by government mostly. Particians in the senate controlled the lawmaking sources. Through the leaders, the tribunes, acquired the right to hold executive office and lawmaking power. Rome then began to build an empire. The first phase of the roman expansion was war with the phoenicians. other journeys led to the romans to control the whole mediterranean. The empire was led by many dictators such as Julius Caesar. Julius Caesar directed the construction of a wooden bridge to enable the troops to invade and take over central europe.
Rome rose to an empire and had lots of power and control of most of the land that they were surrounded by and had a good military foundation. The military rose over others and conquered what they thought was rightfully theirs. Rome was a dominant city and nobody wanted to mess with them.
Julius Caesar is assassinated on the Ides of March by Marcus Brutus. They hope to bring back the republic, but civil war breaks out instead. Julius Caesar was murdered for autocratic style of ruling. Then his nephew took over and his ally Marc Antony. Together they killed Julius Caesar’s old enemies. Octavian appoints himself as Augustus which means the first ruler. Augustus got Rome and Antony got Egypt. Antony found Cleopatra and they fell in love. When Augustus found out he thought they wanted Rome for themselves so he attacked them. It was called the battle of Actium. Before they were captured they committed suicide. This brought the last civil war of the republic to an end. Although it was hoped by many that the republic could be restored, it soon became clear that a new political system was forming, the emperor became the focus of the empire and its people. Although, in theory, Augustus was the first citizen and ruled by consent of the Senate, he was in fact the empire's supreme authority. He was basically a king.
