We live in the one of the greatest trading empires in the world. I live in Constantinople, where I sell exotic fruit in one of the stalls that fill the street. We have recently been taken under by the Ottomans and the once cheerful and exotic town has turned into a warzone. The Ottomans cut off trade to our city, so I can’t sell my fruit. Most of the people, including myself, are living in poverty. Before our great city fell, we had many luxuries. We would watch chariot races in the Hippodrome, the big stadium, and actors would perform. Those were the times when Justinian and Theodora ruled. Now we have been thrown into havoc.
I remember the morning it all happened. I was standing at my stall and getting ready to start the day. Constantine, our ruler, had warned us about the recent attacks on Constantinople. There was a loud noise by the walls and the next thing you knew people were rushing around, fleeing from danger. The Byzantine soldiers ran trying to defend our home, but they were unsuccessful. Someone screamed, “ Constantine is dead. Our leader is dead.” I ran to my home to hide until it was all over.
When I finally woke up, I walked out onto the streets and it looked like a foreign land. People were dead in the street and the bodies were piling up. Women and children were screaming, houses were destroyed, and churches were burnt to the ground. Mehmed, our new ruler, claimed our home as his empire and Constantinople fell.
