The Caste System is determined by birth. You cannot change the level you are in. There are five levels in the Caste System in India. The lowest level is the “untouchables”. The untouchables have the lowest, dirtiest jobs. They are the Pariah, also known as, Harijans. They are the outcastes. They did all the dirty work. They did tasks that had diseases and pollution. they cleaned up after funerals, dealing with sewage, and working with animal skin. The second lowest level is the Sudras. They are the unskilled workers. The middle level is the Vaisya. They are the skilled traders, merchants, and minor officials. The second highest is the Kshatriyas. They are the warriors and the rulers. The highest level is the Brahmins. They are the priests. They are the highest members in society. They were the golden ones, the symbol of purity. Physical contact, such as just a handshake, was not allowed between the Brahmins and the Untouchables.
There are many theories explaining what started the Caste System . They have religious theories, biological theories and socio-historical theories. In Caste Systems, they are only allowed to associate with people in their own Castes. That means where you live, what your education is, who you marry, where you work, and who you talk to in general is limited. Dalit women are at the bottom of the Caste. The Dalit women are considered less than men. A woman’s body is representing their family and the community honor. Women are usually targets when someone wants to get revenge on the community or the family that the woman belongs in.
In India, they believe that when you die, you will be reincarnated. You are suppose to work hard in your Caste so that when you die and come back to life, you will be in a higher level Caste. If you were an untouchable, and you work hard all of your life, when you die and come back to life you will be in a higher level, such as the Sudra. If you are in the highest Caste, then if you work hard you’re whole life, then you will remain to be in the highest Caste. Kharma comes in hand at this. If you have good kharma, you will be in a higher class the next time you come back to life. If you have bad kharma, or dharma, you will be demoted in the Caste System.
